Arboriculture

What is arboriculture?

Arboriculture is the science and practice of planting and maintaining trees. It differs from forestry and sylviculture (tree farming) in that it typically refers to tree works in an urban environment and focuses on the maintenance and protection of individual trees or multiple trees in urban settings such as parks, reserves, schools and gardens.

Arboriculture, or tree surgery, is concerned with maintaining tree health and safety through the use of various techniques including pruning, thinning, bracing, soil health care and pest control. Tree or branch removal is needed when trees have become dangerous or aesthetically unpleasing. Pruning and/or removal for non-health related issues (such as home renovation and building) are also important elements of arboriculture and tree management in the urban landscape.

Why hire an arborist?

An arborist is a trained professional with an in-depth knowledge of the science and technique of arboriculture. Arborists are experts on the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide appropriate care at all stages of a tree's lifecycle.

Tree care performed by a qualified arborist can ensure the longevity of attractive healthy trees and can lead to substantial aesthetic, economic and environmental returns. Poorly maintained trees can be an eyesore and a significant liability.

Both the pruning and the removal of trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous. For this reason:

Tree work should only be carried out by professional arborists who are trained and equipped to work safely in trees.

In addition to a working knowledge of arboriculture, the modern arborist must understand the many regulatory and social issues including government and council regulations and legal issues, and also have a well-developed awareness of environmental needs.
